Edit hands-on, roll back anything

A generated timetable is a starting point, not a verdict. Smootables lets you drag, swap, split, and pin lessons with the model checking every move, and keeps versions and an edit log so nothing you do is final.

What it does

Editing in Smootables is manual control with the planning model still watching. Every move is checked against the same teachers, rooms, and groups the solver used: drop a lesson somewhere problematic and "Conflicts detected" names exactly who clashes, with the choice to "Proceed anyway" left to you. Before you even drop, the "Free resources" insight shows which teachers, rooms, and equipment are free in a slot.

The second half of the story is recovery. Edits land in an undo stack and a per-version edit log, every generation saves a restorable version, and "Undo last generation" rolls the whole timetable back. You can experiment on a live timetable because nothing here is a one-way door.

How it works in Smootables

  1. Pick a lens: filter by teacher, room, group, equipment, or an individual student to see that week grid; with everything on "All" you get the full list view instead.
  2. Move lessons directly: drag to a new slot, drop one lesson on another to swap ("Drop to swap"), and let the conflict dialog catch overlaps before they land.
  3. Open Edit lesson for precision: day, week, start and end time; teachers, room (or Remote (no room)), equipment, groups, individual students, and exemptions; applied to "This lesson only" or the whole source placement. Split lesson in half and Move to another period… cover restructuring.
  4. Pin what must not move ("Pin lesson" keeps it fixed through regeneration), park what does not fit yet in the Waiting area, and switch on the Extended grid to place lessons manually between 06:00 and 22:00 or on weekends, marked "Outside school day profile".
  5. Roll back at any distance: Undo (Ctrl+Z / ⌘Z) for the last edits, the Edit Log for what changed in this version, Versions and changes with "Restore this version" for whole timetables, and Undo last generation for the solve itself.

Key capabilities

Conflict-checked moves

Drags, drops, swaps, and splits are validated against teachers, rooms, and groups first. The dialog names the clash, and overriding it is an explicit choice.

Slot insight before you drop

"Free resources" lists the free teachers, rooms, and equipment for any slot, with equipment shown as available units out of total.

Pinning that survives the solver

Pinned lessons stay exactly where you put them through regeneration, including manual placements outside the school day profile.

Extended grid for real life

Evening classes, Saturday sessions, early meetings: place lessons from 06:00 to 22:00 and on weekends, badged "Outside school day profile" so nothing hides.

Waiting area

Park lessons off the grid and drag them back when the picture clears; parked lessons are flagged in exports so they are never forgotten.

Versions, edit log, undo

Twenty undo steps per period while you work, a per-version edit log, restorable versions for every generation, and one-click rollback of the last solve.

Where it fits

Editing picks up where timetable generation stops, and regeneration respects what you pinned, so the two hand back and forth cleanly. The Planner assistant makes the same edits from a sentence when the grid work gets repetitive, and every change ends up in the same versions either way. For the judgment calls behind the edits, the timetabling guides are the place to start.
